Our history
The HAMPIAUX company was founded on 1st May 1946 on an impulse of Charles Hampiaux. It was just after the war, a time of crisis, with no raw materials (such as brass or copper). Shortly after, he invited his 16-year-old son, Claude Hampiaux, to help him in the business, which at that time was repairing welding and cutting torches. “My father would have preferred to be a baker so that at least he would be sure of being able to eat after years of rationing. But he did the rounds of the American camps recovering brass shell cases which were then melted down. The metal was poured into moulds to form ingots which would then be worked. At that time, the objective was to operate in the Nancy region and the metallurgical sites of Pompey and Neuves-Maisons.”
In the sixties, there were about 25 brands manufacturing welding torches in France, but by the nineties only 5 remained. The main reason was the decline of industry in France with a reduction in number of final users. Today Hampiaux is the last French manufacturer of welding torches to operate a production line from raw material to final product.
